Samudayik Biu Bank

Samudayik Biu Bank Completed Programme · सामुदायिक बिउ बैंक

Village seed banks conserving 46 local crop varieties, run by farmer groups.

Local maize, millet, bean and rice varieties were disappearing as hybrid seed spread. Many of them cope better with drought and poor soil.

Twelve farmer groups set up seed banks with storage, record books and a simple rule: borrow a kilo, return a kilo and a half at harvest. By the end of the programme the banks were conserving 46 varieties and lending to more than 1,100 households.

Objectives

  • Establish 12 farmer-run seed banks
  • Conserve and document at least 40 local varieties
  • Run participatory variety trials with farmers
  • Hand over banks with storage and record systems
